Burchell’s zebra is the only zebra subspecies that can be legally imported and sold in the United States, making it the standard for authentic zebra hide rugs. Every skin in our collection is a genuine Burchell’s zebra hide sourced from Africa.

Unlike
zebra-print cowhides, genuine Burchell’s zebra skins feature naturally occurring shadow stripes, distinct soft brown bands between the darker stripes, one of the clearest signs of authenticity. Each hide is professionally tanned for lasting durability while preserving the zebra’s distinctive pattern and natural beauty. Because these animals live in the wild, minor life marks and occasional professional repairs are normal and contribute to the uniqueness of each skin rather than detracting from it.

We stock A- and Super A-grade Burchell’s zebra hides, carefully selected for symmetry, appearance, and minimal imperfections. Measuring roughly 7 x 6 feet, these hides are ideal for floors, walls, or dramatic statement furniture. A genuine Burchell’s zebra skin is one of nature’s most striking decorative pieces.

FAQs

Are these rugs real zebra skins or printed cowhide?

All rugs in this collection are 100% genuine Burchell’s Zebra hides sourced from Africa. Unlike "zebra-print" cowhides, which are cattle hides screen-printed with a pattern, these skins feature the unique, natural texture and "shadow stripes" (faint brown stripes between the black and white) that can only be found on a real zebra.

What do the different "Grades" mean (A-Grade vs. Trophy)?

Since zebras live in the wild, their hides naturally carry "life marks." We grade them to help you choose the right look:

  • Trophy Grade: These are the most pristine hides available (roughly 1 in 1,000). They are near-flawless with minimal to no visible scarring or repairs.
  • A-Grade: These are high-quality, beautiful hides that may have very minor, professional repairs or small natural markings that are only visible upon close inspection. They offer a perfect balance of beauty and value.
How should I clean my genuine zebra rug?

Zebra hides are remarkably durable and naturally dirt-resistant. For routine care, simply shake the rug outside or vacuum it using a handheld attachment in the direction of the hair. For spills, use a damp cloth with a tiny amount of mild soap or baby shampoo and dab gently—never soak the leather, as this can cause it to stiffen.
